THE GAD GRANT
The Gad Grant is available to currently enrolled college students who are working towards a career in photojournalism.
Gad Schuster Gross was a Romanian immigrant to the United States. He was an up and coming photojournalist who worked with Contact Press Images and later J.B. Pictures. While on assignment for Newsweek working in Northern Iraq, he and his Kurdish guide were captured by Iraqi forces. Witnesses reported that they were taken into a house. They heard Gad scream out. Shots were fired. His body was never recovered.
At the time, Gad had just been accepted to Harvard Law School, as he felt he could be more beneficial to those in need as a lawyer rather than a journalist.
He was a friend to many of us and much loved. We hope this grant will keep his memory alive, and encourage students to work in their community and share the stories that they discover there.
The work should be journalistic. Don't set up pictures, and don't remove, or add elements in post-production.
Strive to be truthful.
Recipients will work with one of our mentors on their essay. Ideally, the work will be printed in our publication. If so, the students will be paid the same licensing fee as our other contributors.
